Our Work

Black and white cat walking toward the camera at a pagoda

We run a range of animal outreach programs and initiatives that aim to reduce animal suffering, reduce overpopulation and to support communities in Cambodia. Our programs are funded by kind donations and sponsorship, as well as money made from our veterinary practice. Learn more about our animal outreach programs here, and consider supporting our work.

Free Mondays

Animal Birth Control & Anti Rabies (ABC/AR) is an ongoing initiative at PPAWS. By donating, you help support our mission to offer desexing, deworming treatments and rabies vaccinations for cats and dogs living with people who cannot afford to pay for treatment. Doing so will vastly improve the animals’ health, and will reduce the number of rabies cases in Cambodia. By desexing cats and dogs, we reduce the number of unwanted and unexpected animal births. This reduces suffering for stray animals and combats the dog meat trade by lessening the number of stray dogs that can be caught and killed for consumption.

Desexing

One of our most significant challenges is the stray cat and dog population, with estimated millions of homeless animals across Cambodia. The higher the population of stray cats and dogs, the more overcrowding issues, animal suffering, potential for animal attacks, and supply for the dog and cat meat trade.

By desexing animals, we can improve their individual quality of life by reducing stress and the burden of feeding young. This will decrease the population of animals in Phnom Penh, making it easier to feed and care for the animal population. Not only will reducing the number of strays decrease the number of animals at risk for injury or starvation, but it will also help to decrease the dogs at risk of entering the dog meat trade.

Desexing even one animal can prevent thousands more in the future. Female dogs can have litters by the age of 6 months and can birth 8-12 puppies and have two litters per year. This exponential growth rate could lead one unneutered dog to be responsible for thousands of puppies in just a few years.

At PPAWS we offer desexing surgeries through our vet practice and go on regular missions to pagodas, and to provinces across Cambodia offering free desexing surgeries to stray animals, and animals living within the communities. Your donations and sponsorships go a long way to helping control the population and reduce the suffering of animals in Cambodia.

Mobile Veterinary Clinic

One of the biggest challenges we face when working away from the clinic is having access to a clean and sterile area to perform medical procedures and give treatments.
Sometimes, an animal needs more intense care and has to be brought to our clinic. This is a costly, time-consuming, and stressful experience with our current resources. A Mobile Veterinary Clinic would enable PPAWS to perform necessary medical treatments and surgery onsite, eliminating these issues.

Catch, Neuter & Release

Monks living at pagodas have a traditional Buddhist duty to care for those who cannot care for themselves, including animals. However, with pagodas in and around Phnom Penh facing increasing animal and human populations, this puts an increasing strain on their limited resources.

Many cats and dogs are dumped at pagodas with the expectation that monks there will look after them, but this isn’t always possible, and many animals can suffer as a result.

PPAWS regularly visits pagodas to neuter the large populations of stray dogs and cats housed there. By desexing the cats and dogs at pagodas we decrease their load and improve the welfare of the animals.

Our Missions

Every donation we receive goes a long way in helping the animals of Cambodia. To receive regular updates on our work, please follow our Facebook page. We regularly visit rural areas without access to veterinary care in order to administer much needed vaccinations and spay/neutering surgeries. These efforts help prevent the stray animal population from continuing to rise, and increases their long-term health and happiness.
