Post Surgery Care Instructions
Your companion has just had a considerable surgery and needs time and space to rest and heal. Please carefully read and follow these instructions to care for them in the days and weeks after surgery.
- Keep the animal in a confined area for one day.
- Restrict the animal’s activity for 7-14 days after surgery.
- Discourage running, jumping and rough play.
- Prevent the animal from licking the wound (cones are available for sale from PPAWS).
- Do not wash or clean the incision.
- Keep the incision dry for at least 7 days after surgery. Bathing and swimming are not advised.
- The stitches will dissolve over time (unless otherwise stated) and getting them wet will cause the stitches to dissolve too quickly.
- The bandage can be removed 3 days after surgery. Once the bandage has been removed please check your pet’s incision daily until it has healed.
Signs To Look Out For
At the site of the incision, look out for:
- Excessive Swelling: Sudden or significant swelling around the incision site.
- Redness: Increased redness, especially if accompanied by red streaks radiating from the incision.
- Discharge: Pus or a foul-smelling discharge from the incision.
- Fluid Buildup (Seroma or Hematoma): A collection of fluid under the skin around the incision site.
- Fever: A temperature above 38.0-39.2°C.
Other signs of illness:
- Lethargy: If your pet becomes unusually tired or inactive.
- Loss of Appetite: If your pet stops eating or drinking.
- Vomiting or Diarrhea: If vomiting or diarrhea persists for more than 24 hours.
- Pale Gums: Pale gums can indicate a serious problem.
- Difficulty Urinating or Defecating: If your pet is straining or struggling to pass urine or defecate.
- Excessive Pain or Discomfort: If your pet shows signs of pain or discomfort for longer than a week.
- Suture Breakage or Chewing: If the sutures are broken or your pet is chewing at the incision site
